Television is available in a majority of households across first world countries. With any technology, they simply get more advanced and cheaper at the same time. As televisions become more affordable, they become more widespread. For example, it wasn't that long ago that when plasma and LCD televisions first arrived on the market, they were close to 000 (with some larger sets being above this price mark) so they were only available to a very exclusive group of people. Now, you can easily find models that are sold for less than 00. It is even common place for some households to own more than one television.
In addition to having televisions, people would likely also have other electronic equipment that complements their televisions. Examples include a DVD player (or the newer Blue-Ray player), DVD recorder, TiVo, amplifiers and game consoles (Nintendo Wii, Sony PlayStation 3, Xbox 360). With the ever growing components and a decent sized television screen (typically 40 inches diagonally across), one would be hard pressed in trying to find enough space and keeping the wires organized especially if the living room isn't very big. And can you imagine the number of remote controls there would be?
Corner Shelving Unit
In such a situation, I strongly recommend a corner TV unit such as the corner TV cabinet. The corner of the living room is often seen as an awkward location to use. If you placed a single seat couch there, you would still have an empty space behind. If space is something that you simply cannot waste, then you should consider a corner unit. By making the proper measurements before going shopping, you will be able to find a unit that fits snugly against the corner wall.
There are units that come with or without doors and with one or more drawers for additional storage. So an example setup might be that you place the various equipments in the shelving, and your DVD collections and the remote controls in the drawers. Whichever the case, the wires can be neatly hidden away so as to prevent any accidental tripping, which can be particularly dangerous if you have young children. The other benefit is that they can reduce the chances of dust accumulating on the equipment.
